Co-creating inclusive urban gardens in Zagreb
31 October 2025
The City of Zagreb has been engaging local communities in designing an inclusive common space at the urban garden in the Modernist neighborhood of Sopot.
Urban gardens in Zagreb are a program that the City has been implementing since 2013, with foundations in the agricultural tradition in the City area, and whose goal is to achieve sustainable management of land owned by the City, as well as serve as a social measure to help citizens grow fruits and vegetables for their own use.
Workshop on Urban Garden co creation in Zagreb
Amongst the objectives of the city in the Bauhaus Bites project is to improve these gardens and make them more welcoming and accessible. As part of this work, and in the Bauahus Bites spirit of co-creation, Zagreb has organized a series of workshops involving garden plot users, children from nearby schools, residents and therapists from the Rehabilitation Center, and members of the St. Ana Home for the Elderly to incorporate their ideas and perspectives into the gardens’ continued development.
The knowledge and ideas from the workshops will guide the next stages of the process: designing the shared garden area according to the principles of the New European Bauhaus (sustainability, community building, and high-quality physical space).
Implementation and activation of the garden will turn this communal space into a living example of how urban gardens can combine environmental responsibility, social cohesion, and human-centered design. Stay tuned for further updates as Zagreb’s gardens continue to grow!
