Birmingham
Birmingham’s approach connects communities, creative expression, and nature-based solutions to build a healthier, greener city.
About Birmingham
Birmingham is England’s second largest city and the largest municipality in Europe. The city is renowned for its young and diverse population. Home to 187 different nationalities, it is one of the first super diverse cities in the UK, where ethnic minorities make up more than half of the population. Birmingham is also recognized as a Local Authority of Sanctuary, committed to supporting asylum seekers, refugees and migrants and helping them settle in local communities.
Birmingham is proud to be part of the Bauhaus Bites programme, using food to celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and support sustainable living. Within the project, the city is creating a community assets map which includes growing spaces, community kitchens, and social hubs in East Birmingham. In addition, a Shared Decisions Fund will support grassroots initiatives to co-produce and strengthen community spaces.
Building a Sustainable and Inclusive Food Future
To champion sustainable and culturally relevant gardening, Birmingham will develop a culturally diverse growing database exploring crops suited to UK conditions and a land use report exploring how land can support inclusive, beautiful growing environments.
The city will create a food system literacy competency framework to ensure educational materials are inclusive and effective, while working with communities to co-produce creative literacy innovations through art, music, and storytelling.
Birmingham will also co-produce resources with local organizations to embed Bauhaus Bites principles within everyday spaces, celebrating the city’s rich cultures and cuisines. To achieve this, the team will work alongside local organizations, promoting and building on the good work already happening and collaborating on identified gaps to ensure meaningful and sustainable outcomes for communities.
