Fundão
Fundão is a small municipality with a bold vision: to drive inclusive, sustainable and community-led innovation rooted in local identity and resilience.
About Fundão
Located in the heart of Portugal, Fundão’s approach connects its agricultural heritage, multicultural community, and food traditions to drive inclusive, place-based innovation rooted in local identity.
Known as “terra de acolhimento” — the “welcoming land” — Fundão embraces its multicultural fabric, shaped by generations of local families, returning emigrants, and migrant communities who now call the town home.
As a Trailblazer city in Bauhaus Bites, Fundão brings together its longstanding agricultural heritage, a deep connection to food, and a strong ecosystem of social and cultural innovation. The city’s action plan has been co-created with the community to transform the local food system through inclusive, place-based and sustainable practices aligned with the New European Bauhaus ambitions of beauty, sustainability and inclusion.
Food, Education & Local Community
Fundão will develop a local food environment centered around the Fundão FoodLab, which will host food literacy workshops, cooking sessions, events, and intercultural celebrations. The city will also launch a Local Food Council, implement awareness campaigns on sustainable consumption, and promote seasonal gastronomy events co-organized with local producers, schools, youth groups, and migrant communities.
With an emphasis on short food chains, participatory design, and rural-urban dialogue, Fundão’s actions will focus on regenerating community spaces through food, creativity, and intergenerational exchange.
The municipality sees food not only as nutrition, but as a language — a way to connect people, share traditions, and imagine new futures. Local producers, artisans, seniors, youth, and newcomers will be at the heart of this process.
