Murska Sobota

Murska Sobota’s approach strengthens the local food environment through schools, education and community storytelling.

About Murska Sobota

Murska Sobota is a town in north-eastern Slovenia, the regional centre of Pomurje, close to the Austrian and Hungarian borders. With fertile landscapes surrounding the city, food is woven into everyday life — through family gardens, small farms, the weekly market, and recognisable Prekmurje cuisine. That local food culture creates a practical opportunity to support healthier habits and more sustainable choices.

In the Bauhaus Bites project, Murska Sobota will be represented by the Centre for the Development of Sustainable Society. As a Twin city they have a clear priority: strengthening the local food environment through schools and education, in collaboration with local producers, community organizations, and municipal departments.

Bringing Food Literacy to Schools and Communities

Murska Sobota will follow a “small but real” pathway, centered on practical, maintainable actions. The city will set up Living Labs to build food literacy and reduce food waste, alongside co-design workshops that will help turn learning and local needs into feasible improvements in everyday spaces, especially school and community settings.

Community engagement and storytelling will connect generations and cultures through local food narratives, with accessible public-facing outputs such as school and community showcases or mini displays.

Rooted in New European Bauhaus values, Murska Sobota’s work will aim to make better food choices easier to recognize, access and enjoy across the city.
