Oostende
Oostende is working to connect people, places, and policy to co-design a more sustainable and healthy local food system.
About Oostende
Oostende has a strong fishery history, with locally caught shrimp as the flagship species for the local fisheries. Beyond the sea and the sandy beaches as its major attractors, Oostende has many highlights in art, culture, leisure and green spaces.
In Bauhaus Bites, Oostende will work with the Vuurtorenwijk (Lighthouse District) and the area at the East bank of the city (Oosteroever) with new high-rise apartment developments. As a Twin city in the project, Oostende is working to operationalize the values of the New European Bauhaus — sustainability, inclusion and aesthetics — through a concrete set of actions.
Strengthening Lighthouse District's Food System
The Lighthouse district is a neighborhood that often feels overlooked, somewhat isolated from the rest of the city. It is separated by the harbor and split into two by a busy four-lane road. The fishing history and activity are still present but sit in contrast with the new developments of high-rise apartment buildings close to the seaside.
With the Bauhaus Bites principles in mind, Oostende will transform the food system in the Lighthouse district towards greater sustainability by improving the availability and knowledge of sustainable, healthyand fresh food. Ensuring better access to food aid for vulnerable groups, increasing edible plants in public green spaces and fostering social inclusion and food literacy among residents.
