How can kids learn about sustainable food in a fun and easy way? This is precisely what students in Município do Fundão explored, during two local Bauhaus Bites workshops. The idea was to bring food literacy directly into the school environment and help children develop an early connection between food, health, sustainability and everyday choices.
The first workshop, held with 3rd-year students at Santa Teresinha Primary School, was delivered by WWF Portugal, which has been an important partner and ally of Fundão throughout the implementation of Bauhaus Bites. Working with a variety of aromatic herbs throughout the workshop, students learned about gardening and food production. They also worked directly with the soil, planting the herbs and exploring their various scents and smells. After the workshop, the kids took the plants home to continue caring for them together with their parents.

At João Franco Primary School, Funãdo worked with 3rd- and 4th-year students through two different sessions, both delivered by Cristina Ferreira Flor, a consultant and trainer at LIPOR (Municipalities Association for Sustainable Waste Management of Greater Porto), with extensive experience in food and environmental education and in working for children.
The first session focused on composting, introducing the children to the idea of organic waste as a resource and explored simple and practical ways of reducing and managing food waste.
The second session focused on food literacy engaging the students through preparing various healthy snacks. The children prepared their own snacks while learning about healthy food choices and the importance of developing good eating habits from an early age.

– We invited Cristina specifically because of her extensive experience in working with children and her ability to address these topics through dynamic, practical and engaging educational methods. Her experience in communicating food and environmental issues to wider audiences, including through Portuguese television, also makes her a particularly credible and experienced communicator in this field, says Fabíola Figueira from Município do Fundão.
The work with schools is particularly important in Fundão, with food education and healthy food environment in schools being a growing priority for the Municipality. Schools are an important place to build healthier and more sustainable habits from an early age, and therefore Fundão’s approach goes beyond individual educational activities: the Municipality has been investing increasing resources in improving both food education and the quality of the food environment itself, including the meals and practices in school canteens.
These workshops were key components of Fundãdo’s Bauhaus Bites Action Plan, to enhance food literacy among school communities. We are excited to see Fundao’s Action Plan objectives coming to life through these activities with local communities and stakeholders.
